What is Meditation?

Written by: shaynebance

Life is definitely no walk in the park but who says it has to be a run through a noisy, congested street?

Is it becoming more difficult for you to wake up in the morning? Are you beginning to dread the events of the day? Well, maybe it is time to do something for yourself. First, stop. Then, breathe. And while you are at it, maybe it would help if you Meditate.

The mention of Meditation usually brings about images of old men humming away, or should it be “oomming” away the whole afternoon. Now, humming away doesn’t seem to be helpful, right? Research, however, has proven that Meditation helps us relax and develop our power of concentration.

What is Meditation? 'You do not need to leave your room.
Remain sitting at your table and listen.
Do not even listen, simply wait.
Do not even wait, be quiet, still and solitary.
The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked.
It has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.'
Franz Kafka

But what exactly is Meditation?

According to Dr. Joan Borysenko, a pioneer in the field of mind/body medicine, Meditation is anything that brings us to the present and keeps us there. This makes Meditation easy for us to incorporate into our lives. Now, do not start thinking of making shopping as your form of Meditation. Living in the NOW is one thing to keep in mind when meditating.

Meditation may take on many forms but its foundation basically lies on three principles:
  1. In order to concentrate, we focus on one thing or object.
Our object of focus may be our breathing, a word that we repeat whether verbally or mentally, or the sensations that we feel in our body. Meditation usually involves the senses for when we smell, feel, or listen, we start to live more in the present.

  2. When our thoughts start to wander, we take them back to our object of focus.
“Quieting” the mind is not easy so don’t castigate yourself every time you find yourself thinking of other things aside from your object of focus. Reprimanding yourself will just make it more difficult for you to focus.

Whenever you find yourself thinking of some other thoughts, don’t fight them but rather acknowledge them and let them pass. Meditation has nothing to do with hiding our thoughts or suppressing them. When you get distracted, just go back to your object of focus.

  3. During Meditation, ignore all irrelevant thoughts and sensations.
Meditation doesn’t bring us to another place of existence so don’t expect it will. When meditating, we will still be able to hear the people around us. However, we don’t let these distract us. We don’t let these bring us out of the NOW.

The Me in Meditation

So you ask, what do I get from Meditating?

As mentioned earlier, Meditation helps us relax and concentrate. We become more aware and observant because we are more focused on what is happening at the moment.

Meditating is an efficient and effective technique that helps us control our mind and relax our bodies. It does not only make us more conscious about what’s happening around us but we also become aware of what’s happening within ourselves.

Meditation may not be able to turn that one big, busy street called life into a park, but it might just help you stop and see the flowers around the corner.

Last comment may hardly be acceptable to any one who is immersed in meditation.Meditation will convert your life not into a park but into a beatiful garden, full of flowers and fruits. And note it,fruits will include lot of material gains-;name,fame,health,wealth and so on.Much more can be expected from meditation than the so called usual experts talk of.

Note the stanza written by Franz Kafka quoted above.I do not know who he or she is,but there is no doubt that he/she has tasted the nector of being,of meditation.I agrre when he/she says 'The world will freely offer itself to you',and 'it will roll in ecstasy at your feet'.I bow to such exalted soul.

Meditation is inner astronomy. You discover the stars, the moon, and the sun inside you.

Meditation is also an adventure of self-discovery.

Ask yourself who you are when you are in deep sleep, unconscious and without even a dream to prove that you exist at all. Ask yourself who you were ten months before you were born and who you will be just one moment after your body dies. Meditation increases awareness of the natural phenomena that is actually going on behind your own eyes. Self-knowledge has intrinsic value, even without the indescribable bliss nature generously unleashes in those who practice meditation with sincerity and patience.

Meditation is a state of mind achieved by relaxing the physical body and suspending conscious awareness. If practised regularly for long periods,It opens the door for higher conciousness, whereby the meditater is connected to the divine signals.Once the logical mind is kept aside,we get connected to the intuitive mind, and through that to the universal intelligence.
This changes you physically, mentally, emotionally, and,of course, spiritually. You get centered. You get established in your center which is at the Navel centre,Manipura Chakra, what the Japanese call Hara. Now nothing throws you off center for very long and you recover quickly. You find yourself reacting calmly and rationally, no matter what is going on around you or in your life. You inner self keeps watching and regularly guiding your outself.

There is lot of confusion about the true nature of meditation. This is mainly caused by the mistaken belief that meditation is usual form of concentration. Usual concentration, when the mind is focussed on an external object,or a mental idea is not meditation. That is why the people who try to concentrate on outside objects fail to make much headway on the spiritual path.
Real meditation is a complete reversal of this process of usual concentration. It means/involves turning the mind not on external objects but to the self, back upon its source. Sri Ramakrishna Paramhans, the great 19th century mystic, explains this by the example of the police sergeant who goes about his rounds in the dark with a lantern (which has dark glass on three sides) in his hands. With that light he can see others but they cannot see him, unless he turns the lantern towards himself.Since in meditation we are supposed to see ourself, our inner-self,we have to focus the lantern on the self. This is what meditation is.It is a journey towards the self, towards your inner self, towards your soul, and through that to the universal soul/God.

Most people understand only one part of meditation. In meditation, you sit down quietly and repeat your mantra. During that period of meditation your mind remains one-pointed, but after that, your mind goes back to its same previous grooves. This is not the full process of meditation; the full process of meditation is a whole life process. It means attention to the whole of life. It should not be a strenuous act; it should not be forced. Your whole life can be one of meditation. From morning until evening you can meditate, either consciously or unconsciously, and if you do that meditation well, it will speedily take you harmony, happiness, and Divinity.

The root of the word “meditation” is similar to the root word for “medical” or “medicate,” and the root of all these words implies “attending to” or “paying attention to” something. In meditation, you pay attention to dimensions of yourself that are seldom observed or known—that is, your own deepest, inner levels. Meditation involves a type of “inner attention” that is quiet, concentrated, and at the same time, relaxed.

Medition is inner exploration. It is a long journey, and there are no short cuts. And remember that that this exploration has to to be done by the individal alone. It is,after all, your unique journey. So it is always better not to be dependent on the outside help.Once you understand the steps, you walk the walk in your own, individaul way.

The attitude of mental serenity gained in meditation gives us a physical poise which is invaluable in meeting the challenges of day to day life, and reduces the friction/tension beyond comprehension. And the benefit is not merely personal. The serenity and physical harmony of one such well-poised person will impart its benefits to a whole group.

Meditation is a death – death of all that you are now. Of course there will be a resurrection, but that will be a totally new, fresh original being which you are not even aware is hidden in you.
Meditation does not come naturally to you, because in meditation you will have to disappear forever. There is no coming back. That creates fear.

"Meditation is the bridge that connects the lower mind with the higher mind. Through that the aspirant crosses over from the din and distractions of the sense-bound world to the world of stillness and silence, from the world of darkness to the world of everlasting light. All preliminary spiritual disciplines end in meditative awareness."

Meditation is not a technique but a stage reached in awareness. It may be reached by any of the techniques, but the destination is the same.. As someone has said the door to meditation may vary, the object of meditation may also vary, but meditation as a mental process does not vary in its basic nature. Indeed, meditation or meditative awareness may be regarded as a common highway shared, at least for a short distance, by all the different spiritual paths.

Meditation is not an exercise in passive withdrawal, an escape from reality. It is an intense seeking of Truth in the only place where Truth ought to be sought.
It is an eager search for God in the unknown depths of the heart.
Just as a man in darkness gropes about by stretching out his hands, so does the meditator seek God within by stretching her or his intuitive faculty, the pure buddhi.

Meditation is not usual/ordinary concentration on external objects.Ordinary concentration is the result of attachment to various external objects, whereas meditation is the result of detachment. To get absorbed in an undertaking which one likes because it satisfies one’s desires is easy. But to get absorbed in something through detachment is difficult. This becomes possible only when detachment is supported by intense aspiration

Meditation is a process of stitching, of reminding ourselves again and again of the deeper truths-;impermanence, loving kindness-;until the patch is sewn on so strongly it becomes a part of the cloth and strengthens the whole garment. Then we're not shaken by outer circumstances.

The path of meditation gradually takes us to a stage where we understand the illusory nature of reality, the impermanence that pervades everything. Even as it is it isn't, and someday it won't be at all.

This doesn't mean that we deny our involvement with life, but that we don't take it quite so seriously; we approach it with less hope and fear. Then we're like an adult playing with a child on the beach: the adult doesn't suffer like the child if the sand castle is washed out to sea. Yet compassion arises in seeing the child's suffering.

"Some people think that if they meditate for fifteen minutes a day, they ought to become enlightened in a week and a half. But it doesn't work like that. Even if you meditate and pray and contemplate for an hour of the day, that's one hour you're meditating and twenty-three you're not. What are the chances of one person against twenty-three in a tug-of-war? One pulls one way, twenty-three the other-;who's going to win?

It's not possible to accomplish what must be achieved in the ground of the mind with one hour of daily meditation. You have to pay attention to your spiritual process throughout the day, as you work, play, sleep; the mind always has to be moving toward the ultimate goal of enlightenment."

For every action there is a reaction, not just in theoretical physics but in ordinary human life as well. When you create positive actions you will eventually reap positive reactions for yourself and for others. In this way what we call ethics and morality are woven into the very fabric of the universe right down to the subatomic level.

"Meditation is a pleasure in itself and the healthiest approach is to enjoy the journey without thoughts of gaining a pot of gold at the end of some distant rainbow.-;-Thinking about goals takes us further away from choiceless awareness, relaxation, and ecstasy, and is thus counterproductive. It is best to fully enjoy the journey of meditation without seeking any title, credentials, or an ultimate brass ring that we can selfishly own and brag about to others."

In the path of bhakti this meditative awareness is attained through love. The devotee thinks of the Deity with so much love that his or her whole being vibrates with that single thought like a gong struck with a mallet. There is no room for any other thought in the mind which gets rooted in the living presence of the Deity and riveted to the present moment.

It has the ingredients of all these things, but it is more about heightened awareness. Gurumaa
