Is Meditating Weird?
No, on the contrary!
'I have this theory that when you lose it all, that's when you can start again. So when I feel I've lost my spirit, I sit down and close my eyes and do some meditation.'
Justin Timberlake
Not so long ago I read an interview with Duncan Stutterheim, managing director of the fastest growing and most modern dancing- and entertainment company in the Netherlands. Duncan loves Meditating and even goes to India every year to "refuel" his mind. Does this make Duncan a little strange or does it make him a very clever individual? In our mind: the latter! Are Shania Twain, Goldie Hawn, Richard Gere, former U.S. vice president Al Gore, Gwyneth Palthrow, the managing director of Ford, Madonna, the Dalai Lama strange or a little vague?
Time Magazine (8 April, 2003) puts it like this: Scientists study it. Doctors recommend it. Millions of Americans-many of whom do not even own crystals-practise it every day. Why? Because Meditation works".
In the same article: "Meditation classes today are being filled by mainstream Americans who don't own crystals, don't subscribe to New Age magazines and don't even reside in Los Angeles. For upwardly mobile professionals convinced that their lives are more stressful than those of the cow-milking, soapmaking, butter-churning generations that preceded them, Meditation is the smart person's bubble bath’.
The principle of Meditation is very simple. If you put energy into something it will grow. If you put energy into Meditating you will certainly succeed in concentrating better, focussing better and being better able to think clearly. If you succeed in concentrating better, focussing better and think more clearly, you will achieve more. Meditating means strength and power. It does not matter what you do, everything goes better when you meditate. For one person this means a faster promotion, for another a faster marathon. Even though Meditating is not achievement-oriented, in our Western society achievement still means respect. You are certainly not a nerd or a fool when you have just become the new marketing director because lately you were functioning so creatively and productively. Meditating also makes you healthier and more energetic, you often get a more optimistic view of life and you become much more relaxed. According to us there is a good chance that you become irresistible for the people around you. Who does not want such a successful, attentive, radiating, relaxed, cheerful, healthy looking, interested enjoyer of life in his circle of friends or as a colleague, a boss or a partner? Whether you will turn into a softy depends on yourself. In reality you do not have to change anything as regards your lifestyle, way of dressing, way of living, way of eating if you want to start Meditating. Neither do you have to join a Meditation school, a guru or a Meditation club. "Bottom line" is that you can do with Meditation whatever you want. There is a good chance that you will become less interested in the categories that society uses to classify people. Maybe your happiness will depend less and less on what the outside world thinks of you or demands from you. That would be nice, wouldn't it? It does not matter whether you are a softy, a yuppie, left-wing, right-wing, black or yellow: all of these things are Ok in your eyes. Meditation is the art of accepting!
