HIGH VIEW, W.Va. - The monks at the Bhavana Society, a monastery in High View, is unwavering to the proposal of putting a power line that will go through portions of the Northern Shenandoah Valley.
They fear that if a controversial high-voltage power line is built near the monastery, the natural atmosphere, which according to Vice Abbot Bhante Rahula is “considered like our temple”, will be ruined. The proposed line could also impact the delicate meditation process and deter potential guests of the monastery.
The Bhavana Society is located roughly six miles from Gore and the natural forest plays an integral part of the monks’ religion.
Dominion Virginia Power and Allegheny Power are among the utilities looking forward to building the 240-mile, 500-kilovolt power line. The line, according to them, is necessary to address future energy shortages in Northern Virginia, which could suffer rolling blackouts by 2011 if the proposal does not continue. Once built, the power line would take power generated in the Midwest to Northern Virginia.
At present, regulatory agencies on both states are still considering whether to approve their respective line segments.
