Meditation - An Effective Way to Reduce Stress
FRIDAY, 22 FEBRUARY 2008
Meditation has been proven to reduce stress and the risk factors of cardiovascular disease. It focuses on quieting the mind while concentrating either on one’s own breath or a mantra sound. Try a regular practice of meditation for 20-30 minutes each session. It can decrease heart rate and breathing rate, improve concentration, and relax muscles.
Studies have shown that meditation lowered anxiety more than twice as much as any other relaxation technique.
In a study of 90 cancer patients, those who practiced meditation regularly for one and a half hours a week during the seven-week period had a decline in total mood disturbance of 65%, and a 31% reduction in symptoms of stress. They also had more energy; lower depression, anxiety, anger, confusion; fewer cardiopulmonary and gastrointestinal symptoms; and less emotional irritability and depression.
