Moment of Silence in Classrooms Imposed by Govt
WEDNESDAY, 28 NOVEMBER 2007
The government of Illinois imposed a new state law mandating a moment of silence in the classroom. It is aimed at filling a spiritual or religious void. A positive way to use the silence in the classrooms is to teach the students and teachers stress-reduction techniques such as deep breathing and meditation.
Deep breathing has been proven to decrease perceptions of test anxiety, nervousness, self-doubt and concentration. Meanwhile, meditation techniques improve concentration, mindfulness, and contemplation. It has both physical and psychological effects on the body.
A moment of silence in the classroom is a great way to start giving children a tool to cope with stress, anxiety, insomnia, depression, and other negative emotions.
