Meditation Answers Fear of Death
FRIDAY, 27 JULY 2007

We often ask how, why, and when it is going to end. With this thinking, it often leads us to think about and eventually fear our own death. Most people undergo such anxiety and develop what we call the fear of death. But to overcome this phobia, Tibetan Buddhist teacher and scholar Tulku Thondap offers a meditation that lets the image of the Amitabha Buddha bring a sense of peace and acceptance.
Fear is believed to be a feeling that is just created by our mind. We have the control over our minds and can conquer our feelings. To do this, we can start training our minds now by meditating on Amitabha, the Buddha of Infinite Light and by following these steps:
- Visualize the Blissful Pure Land, the paradise of the Buddha. It is vast as the universe, made of colorful light, filled with enlightened beings. It is a world of total peace and joy where fear and sadness are unknown.
- The Buddha of Infinite Light sits on a huge flower, covered by a moon-cushion of light. His body is red, made of luminous radiating blessing lights. He wears simple ascetic robes and holds a bowl filled with nectar. He is omniscient and sees all simultaneously. His compassion cares for all and his power fulfills the needs of all whose minds are open. Picture him in your imagination as the powerful enlightened nature.
- Next sing this prayer with joy and trust in the Buddha: "Oh Buddha of Infinite Light, please heed our prayers. Please lead us to your Blissful Pure Land. Please be one with us." OM AMI-TABHA HRI! You may repeat it as many times as you can.
- Finally, visualize Buddha and the beams of blessing light coming from his body. Your fear and sadness will be gone. You are now transformed into a body of blessing light and absolute peace.
After doing so, you may now relax knowing that you have attained the absolute peace and joy. Remember that our life after death is the beginning of a joyful future.
