Mindfulness Meditation Gains Acceptance
FRIDAY, 24 NOVEMBER 2006
Mindfulness Meditation or what is also known as Insight Meditation is now gaining increased acceptance in mainstream medicine, according to www.theage.com.
Jon Kabat-Zinn, its foremost proponent, is visiting Australia this month. He has researched mind-body interactions for more than 25 years, focusing on the applications of meditation in the treatment of stress-related disorders. He also developed the Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction program now used in schools, corporations and prisons in the US and hospitals worldwide.
The Mindfulness–Based Stress Reduction Program is an intensive eight-week training to empower participants to take an active role in the management of their health and wellness.
Moreover, meditation has been increasingly being studied by many researchers including Dr. Belinda Khong, a practicing psychologist. With her colleague Dr. Andrew Baillie, she has launched a research interest group at Macquarie University’s Department of Psychology to know how meditation helps and how people use mindfulness in their daily lives.
With mindfulness, instead of reacting to thoughts, emotions and sensations such as pain, the aim is to observe them objectively as they come and go, aware that they are continually changing and will pass.
