Labyrinths, a Tool For Meditation

At St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Millsboro, Delaware, a labyrinth serves as a tool for meditation.

Dotty Lecates, the person who directed the creation of the meditation labyrinth, calls it as the three Rs - release, receive, and return. She explains that when walking through the labyrinth, problems are released, and peace and quietness are received by the time you reach the center. Then, you return to the real world with a better state of mind when walking out.

Dr. Jane Ruffing, a religion professor at Fordham University in New York, says that labyrinths offer meditation for those who prefer movement than being still. She also says that labyrinths have a physiological effect. There is a balancing and calming effect when walking in the labyrinth in a slow rate, she explains. Lecates also say that labyrinths are an easy way to meditate and to have personal time.
