Labyrinths offer retreat for meditation and prayer

In Houston, Texas, labyrinths are growing fast in popularity. These maze-like structures provide meditation practitioners a place to pray and to meditate.

"It's a spiritual experience," says Elaine Pyle, a student who walks and meditates at the newly-constructed labyrinth at the University of St. Thomas. "When I'm walking, I try to purge my mind of negative thoughts, and in the middle, I sit for a while and listen to the voice of God. On the way out, I try to assimilate what I have learned and apply it to my day. It definitely gives me a feeling of peace," she adds.

The University of St. Thomas labyrinth is another addition to the growing number of labyrinths found in Huoston. Other labyrinths are found at churches, parks, gardens, hospitals, and retreat centers. Portable canvas labryinths are even being used by some practitioners.

Rev. Ted Baenziger describes walking in a labyrinth as a spiritual experience while Jennifer Embry, a psychotherapist, believes that walking in a labyrinth puts people in harmony with themselves and their surroundings.
