The International Society on Hypertension in Blacks has presented the results of a new study which shows that transcendental meditation (TM) may reduce six risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome. This was according to a news report released by www.newswise.com.
Participants of the study who were under the TM program practiced a mental technique twice a day. According to the news report, thinking processes become less active and a state of restful alertness, freeing the mind and body of stressful experiences, was gained. The TM program has been found to decrease cardiovascular risk factors in African Americans, aside from lowering the individual risk factors of metabolic syndrome.
The study was aimed to find ways on how to control risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome among Hispanic-American and African-American women. The risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome are obesity, glucose metabolism, blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and blood pressure.
