Meditation in New Zealand's schools proposed
FRIDAY, 30 JUNE 2006
New Zealand - An American educator has promoted the importance of transcendental meditation (TM) in creating "stress less schools" in an educator's conference yesterday.
According to www.stuff.co.nz, Ashley Deans, the director of the Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment in Fairfield, Iowa, says that "there is plenty of space for some TM among the three Rs as part of education for enlightenment." Deans stressed the benefits of TM daily sessions including its effect in increasing creaitivity, intelligence, and academic performance.
However, Vince Cholewa, the spokesman of the Ministry of Education, expressed in the report that the board of trustees in schools would decide if they will introduce TM in their curriculum. "If a board wished to include TM and consulted the parents, it would not be an issue as long the school was meeting curriculum requirements," Cholewa said.
