Meditate to Reduce Aging
MONDAY, 19 DECEMBER 2005
According to an article by Shai D. Bronstein in www.crimson.com, strong evidence was found that meditation can actually reduce aging.
Harvard Instructor Dr. Sara W. Lazar conducted a study on the physical effects of meditation. The study aimed to test the belief that meditation could reduce aging and enhance brain functions. Results showed that there is a thickening in the prefrontal cortex of the brains of people who meditate at least 40 minutes a day. This is in contrast to what naturally happens when people age.
Dr. Lazar will again conduct a study that will test a person’s memory before and after meditation. If follow-up research is successful, meditation could also be prescribed to patients in the future. Dr. Lazar has been a practitioner of yoga and meditation since 1994. She is also a neuroscientist at Massachusetts General Hospital and a psychology instructor at Harvard Medical School.
