Everything about Visualisation

'Imagination is more important than knowledge'
Einstein

The power of visualisation is more and more recognised in the world of sports psychology, medical science, various musical conservatories, drama schools and business life. Our thoughts and our imagination have a strong influence on our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. By means of visualisation-the creating of images in our mind- we can at once start to work on those areas in our body or in our mind that we want to pay special attention to. William James (1842-1910), often considered the father of modern psychology, puts it like this:

'There is a law in psychology that if you form a picture in your mind of what you would like to be, and you keep and hold that picture there long enough, you wil soon become exactly as you have been thinking'.

By means of visualisation we can influence our subconscious and change convictions that lie hidden there. Besides: we put the laws of nature to work to reach our goals effortlessly. Key words for successful visualising are: motivation, relaxation, concentration, imagination, conviction and self-suggestion (affirming). In the section Meditation Techniques you will find under the heading Goal-directed Meditating various well described visualisation exercises. In this page we want to pay special attention to the applications of visualising and how we can enhance the chance of success.

Applications of Visualisation

We can apply the techniques of visualisation in practically all aspects of our lives. To give you an idea of all that is possible and how visualisation works we have put together the five main applications.
  1. Visualisation to relax
  2. Visualisation to influence achievements
  3. Visualisation to support people's health
  4. Visualisation to consult your intuition
  5. Visualisation to realise your wildest dreams
  1. Visualisation to relax
Body and mind react strongly to mental images. When we observe relaxation, rest and order we often see that our body and our brain activity come to rest. In this category of visualisation exercises we create a mental image in which we find ourselves in an environment of total rest and relaxation. In this mental image we ourselves are also completely relaxed and happy and we experience a deep feeling of satisfaction and inner peace. As a result of these mental images we feel a relaxation reaction and we reach a state of great inner rest. At the same time we are mentally reprogramming ourselves so that we begin to experience this relaxation more often as something that stands to reason. When in your daily life you experience a moment of stress and you do not have an opportunity to do regular relaxation exercises or meditations then you can call back into your mind the restful environment of the visualisation. Our mind associates this visualisation with relaxation with the result that our body and our mind quickly return to a state of calmness.

  2. Visualisation to influence achievements
Visualising is a form of mental training. Open a book on sport psychology or personal development and you will read that you have to visualise to reach better achievements. Do not forget that every achievement and every creation always begins in our mind with a thought! By means of visualisation sportsmen and sportswomen can pre-programme both their muscles and their mind and make them ready for the achievements to be performed. During the visualisation we experience in our mind the sports achievement, our performance or the meeting as a big success. We visualise in great detail our preparation, the actual action and the end. Everything becomes a success, we win, we also reach our goals, and there is no doubt about our ability to perform the desired achievement. How strongly visualisation can stimulate people's achievements is demonstrated by the following example. J. Nesmeth was a prisoner in Vietnam for many years. In a small room, cut off from any form of contact and physical activity he spent his time visualising into the minutest details imaginary golf matches. Before he became a prisoner Nesmeth had a golf handicap of 22 (moderate) and when he started playing golf again after seven years' imprisonment and in a poor physical condition it turned out that his visualisation had lowered his handicap to 2 without any physical training. In literature you can find many examples that resemble this one.

  3. Visualisation to support our health
Visualisation is an excellent technique to back up our health. We create a mental image in which we feel totally healed, healthy and full of vitality. We can also visualise the healing process itself. In such cases we visualise that the area of the disease and every cell become healthy again and become full of strength and vitality. You will be surprised by the reactions that you can feel in your body during the visualisation (think of twinklings, a tendency to stretch, etcetera.) Think of the power of the well-known placebo effect and you know how much the power of our mind and how much our thoughts can achieve.

  4. Visualisation to consult your intuition
With this kind of visualisation we try to get into contact with our inner wisdom. Often the answers to the questions that keep us busy are already present in our subconscious. By a constant stream of thoughts we have often created a smoke screen that makes it hard for us to look at things objectively and to take the right decisions. With this kind of visualisation we just go to our subconscious to ask. We create an image of a wonderful environment in which we are going to ask questions to an inner guide. This guide is an imaginary person, animal, feeling, voice, etcetera. We ask the guide to appear in our visualisation. When the guide appears on the backside of our retina we ask the guide a question and just wait. The answers can reach us in all sorts of ways. It can happen in the form of a thought that just enters your mind. Or a feeling, a voice, or a dream that brings you the message. Often the answers are surprisingly simple, to the point, sharp, logical and easy to see. You only have to find them.

  5. Visualisation to realise your wildest dreams.
According to Dr. Joseph Murphy, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Willem de Ridder, Louise Hay, Roy Martina, Deepak Chopra, Shakti Gawain, Napoleon Hill and many other successful people we can realise all our dreams by visualisation. This category of visualisations helps you to be able to control matters that at first sight you cannot influence. Winning the lottery, finding a nice house, a new girl-friend, wealth, good luck, chance meetings are examples of things that you can visualise. "Where intention goes, energy flows. Where energy flows, life grows." Just pretend you have realised your dream and the universe starts to support you and your dreams really come true. It is just like when you are full of frustration looking for a girl-friend or boy-friend. If you want it you do not get it because the wanting begins to grow and the getting does not. If you think that everything will turn out OK, then that is what will happen because the turning OK gets all the energy. Deepak Chokra's fifth law of success, the law of intention, says about the same thing and you can find more and more books and articles that support this theory. Look on the internet at the theories of ZERO POINT FIELD and you will be amazed. With the right intention everything is possible, within reach and achievable.

The Ten Commandments of Visualisation

  1. Always visualise in the present. Our subconscious and the universe take everything literally. If you visualise yourself as healthy in the future you will go on getting well in the future instead of NOW.
  2. Visualise into the minutest details. Colour the mental image from various points of view with all possible details. Examples of this: nature, a beach, trees, waves, animals, sunshine, wind, good weather, friends, reactions of other people, rest and experiencing your own feelings that you would normally feel in such a situation.
  3. Do not visualise too literally. If your wish is not fulfilled right away or it is only fulfilled partially visualising too literally has an adverse effect. Leave the time and the details to the universe and trust the result. Examples of visualising too literally are: visualising that you will be a millionaire on 31/12/2004 or that you will be healed in a month. It is better to visualise that every day you get richer or healthier instead of at a specific moment.
  4. Always visualise with a view to the better interest of everybody and the entire universe.
  5. If your subconscious and your "upper conscious" are in conflict the subconscious will always win. You can also put it differently. When logic and imagination are in conflict the imagination will always win. Think of quitting smoking. Your mind says: stop, but when you see a cigarette you mouth starts to water. Quitting smoking usually only becomes possible when a person really wants it instead of being forced.
  6. If all the time you check or measure if all your wishes have come true or are coming true this sabotages the realisation of the visualisations. Before you know it you transgress the fifth commandment of visualisation.
  7. Visualisation works best when your are completely relaxed. In a state of total relaxation you are more open to suggestion and you are less hindered by diverting thoughts.
  8. Repeat the visualisation frequently and as often as you can.
  9. Visualisations have a stronger effect when we combine them with positive affirmations. To affirmations the same rules apply as to visualisations. For more information on affirmations surf to our special page on this subject.
  10. Trust your subconscious for 100% and after each visualisation let your wish go. Thoughts and feelings run synchronically when our mind and our subconscious agree with each other, as a result of which the energy can really start to work on your wishes.
