Everything about a correct Mental Attitude

A young but earnest Zen student approached his teacher, and asked the Zen Master:

"If I work very hard and diligent how long will it take for me to find Zen."
The Master thought about this, then replied, "Ten years."
The student then said, "But what if I work very, very hard and really apply myself to learn fast -- How long then ?"
Replied the Master, "Well, twenty years."
"But, if I really, really work at it. How long then ?" asked the student.
"Thirty years," replied the Master.
"But, I do not understand," said the disappointed student. "At each time that I say I will work harder, you say it will take me longer. Why do you say that ?"
Replied the Master," When you have one eye on the goal, you only have one eye on the path."

Everything about a Correct Mental Attitude

If we really want to achieve progress with our Meditations we ought to go further than just sit in the correct physical posture and practice the right techniques. We ought to start working on our mental attitude. Meditation may well be the only activity in which we try to do nothing at all as well as possible. Unfortunately, it is impossible to achieve this only by means of will-power and discipline. This does not mean that we have to alter ourselves and our character drastically. We must create the right circumstances in our mental attitude to be able to bring about a real change in our consciousness. We can do this by:

  • Accepting a beginner's attitude
You may read this site with certain prejudices about Meditation in general or this site in particular. You may know a lot about Meditation already, you may have a sceptical attitude towards Meditating or you may doubt if you will ever be able to Meditate yourself. When we ask you to adopt a beginner's attitude we ask you specifically to let go of all these prejudices because they hinder a proper perspective. Look at life with open eyes as if every experience is a first time experience. Try to be as unprejudiced as possible and to have an open mind towards everything you may come across. A beginner's attitude guarantees that we are not hindered by experiences and conditioning from the past so that we can look at life freshly, openly and clearly. If you welcome and accept any experience during your Meditation you will get closer and closer to the essence of Meditating.

  • Take care not to be too goal oriented
The great paradox of Meditating is that you cannot do it wrong. This means that Meditating is never easy or difficult because you always do it well. Only if you manage to let go of your expectations and your tendency to want to reach goals will you really get acquainted with the great advantages that Meditating will bring you. All this looks a bit like cheap sales talk, but it is really true. The basic idea behind Meditating is letting go of your thoughts and being completely in the here and now. This means that you can only Meditate less well if all the time you try to measure and to find out if your Meditation sessions have already brought you results. If you do not cherish any expectations you do not have to sit in judgement over yourself, you do not have to meet impossible demands or to strive after achievements that you cannot reach. You are under no obligation to have a high opinion of yourself or to compare yourself with other people. Perfectionism results in the experiencing of stress and that is exactly what we try to avoid.

  • Take care not to judge
Judging is the constantly evaluating things as good or bad. It is dull, I cannot do this, he is clever, how beautiful, I do not want this, a boring town, boring work, etcetera. We often see that every judgement is connected with a feeling. If you do not accept something, you have a negative view of it and this negative view always goes together with negative sentiments. Judging also results in a situation where if we judge something in a certain way we will view it in the same way. To give an example: making a good first impression often means 1-0, a bad first impression takes a lot of time to conquer. Judging causes stress because it makes us try to keep under control the good and the bad things in our life all the time and this is not possible. Dr Deepak Chopra says in his first spiritual law of success that judging causes unrest in your inner dialogue which prevents you from reaching your true potential. If we start to pay attention to our mind we notice that all the time we judge our experiences, situations and other people. While Meditating we learn how, every time we wander away in our thoughts, we can return to the object of Meditation without judging. We become aware of our tendency to judge and this weakens this tendency. Try to apply this methodology also in your daily life.

  • Accepting and letting go
Our definition of happiness is acceptance. "Acceptance just means that you have reached the stage where you are prepared to see things as they are."(J.Kabat-Zinn). We would like to add to this that acceptance also means that you get reconciled with things as they are. When it rains, it rains. If you have had an unpleasant experience or your relationship has come to an end, just accept the situation. Opposition against what is, is called resistance against reality and by definition resistance costs energy and obscures our view. We often see things the way we are instead of the way they are. Realise that when you react to a person or a situation you actually also react to your own feelings. All this does not mean that you must like everything, must accept everything, that you must always be content and passive. "Whatever you accept completely will take you to peace, including the acceptance that you cannot accept, that you are in resistance,"(Echart Tolle). Acceptance helps you to evaluate situations more clearly and consequently to make better decisions and to act more reasonably as a reaction to a situation. During our Meditations we learn that every time our concentration wanders away we should accept this and make no problem out of it. Never get angry! Accept thing and say yes to no!

  • Discipline and motivation
In spite of the fact that when you begin to Meditate you experience positive effects straight away, Meditation remains something that you can only get good at if you practise it for a long period of time. Sometimes Meditating can be difficult and hard. That is why discipline and motivation are so important. Besides technique, concentration and frequency motivation may well be one of the most important factors that determines the success of your Meditation adventure. "What you bring is what you get". If you think Meditating dull, it is likely to be dull. If you are looking for peace and quiet you are likely to find peace and quiet. Think deeply about the question why you want to Meditate. Once you have made up your mind to start Meditating it is good to make a few arrangements with yourself. Most people stop Meditating during the beginners'stage. This means that you must do all you can to get through this first period. Tell yourself to give Meditation a fair chance during a certain period of time (for example: 100 days) and to Meditate every day for at least 15 minutes or longer. If you really know what you want you have a much better chance that you will be able to realise your goals. If you enjoy Meditating for fifty days and on the fifty-first day you decide to skip your daily session for once you will discover that this makes it easier for you to skip your daily session more often and before you know it….what a pity!

It is important and sensible that you do not drive your discipline and motivation too far. Be motivated in a relaxed sort of way. As soon as you become too fanatical or you get angry with yourself if things do not go so well for a while or you panic if once in a while you just have not got the time, your Meditation adventure will soon come to an end. In this way Meditating will become an obligation instead of a way of relaxing and that is not the idea! Be patient. Meditation is not something that works when you believe in it. The advantages are sure to come your way if only you Meditate with the right mental attitude and if only you do not give up!

Good suggestions.
I will only add two suggestions.1.Enjoy it.Meditation is going to the real self,do not carry the path as a burden.Look forward to the time, and peak(meeting)moments.
2.Make a complete surrender, telling your spirit I am here, throw me away if you can.Soon your hands will be full;you will feel like having achieved. No mother can throw away the child.
