Living in the NOW: 6. Our potential in the NOW
With Meditation we seek our happiness in ourselves and not in objects that surround us. We train ourselves to be in the NOW as often as possible so that our past and our future do not influence the present moment. We try to express our true nature by getting rid of our fears, frustrations, worries, doubts and accepting them. It is our opinion that as long as you cannot be at peace with yourself, and you keep on looking for affirmation, any search for happiness will be in vain
Deepak Chopra and 'Living in the NOW'
This kind of reasoning underlines the first spiritual law of success of Deepak Chopra, the law of pure potentiality. In our archetypal status, according to Chopra, we are pure consciousness and consequently pure potentiality. If we succeed in discovering the essence of our true nature, when our inner point of reference is our soul and not the objects that surround us, we are capable of achieving any dream we might have. Your true nature or soul is free from fear, free from striving after approval or power or the need to keep everything under control. Constant analysing, evaluating and judging cause a lot of unrest in your inner dialogue and form a kind of barrier between you and your potential. According to Chopra we can reach our true nature and our true essence by bridling this unrest by means of silence, Meditation, not judging, and spending time in nature. All this looks a lot like spending time in the NOW, this very moment. In the NOW we get closer to our self and our true essence because all constructions that are meant to keep us away from them stop to function.
The ego likes control and cannot exist without a past and a future. The ego feeds on outward matters and defends itself with all sorts of defensive constructions. Be aware of the fact that these defensive constructions are mainly thoughts. Economic circumstances, social securities, anxieties, daily routine, fear of the unknown, "I cannot do this because….", a hard youth, "What do I really like?", just bad luck, I have no time, "I am too old to….", loneliness, social class, perfection, etcetera, are all of them reasons and excuses to remain within your present circumstances and to fail to undertake new activities. Subconsciously we welcome such excuses because they help us to escape from a confrontation with our self. Do not hurt yourself, live today, and get rid of your attachment to the past and to your excuses: it is really an illusion to think that these take you even one step further in the direction of complete happiness. The unrest created by the ego, as described by us before, blocks the stream of energy between ourselves and our true nature, our true potential. According to Chopra relaxation combined with our normal dynamic individual mind forms the ideal team to achieve whatever you want to achieve. At first sight these two things (silence and dynamics) look like direct opposites but if you know how to control them both at the same time you become independent of situations, circumstances, people and things. The only thing that we still have to do then is finding the right methods and techniques to change our perspective and to live more in the NOW. In other words: we must find ways to let our consciousness grow, to weaken the effect of our mind on our behaviour and to get closer to our emotions and our inner potential. In this pursuit we have to take care that we prevent our journey from becoming a story driven on by our ego in which our happiness and our inner rest become dependent on time and become things that belong to the future. Do not forget: by definition this happiness and this inner rest only exist in the NOW and never somewhere in the future.
