Taoist Meditation
There are many types of Meditation around the world. One of these is the Taoist Meditation. Taoism is an English term which refers to a variety of Chinese philosophical and religious traditions and concepts. The word “Tao” means “path” or “way”.
Basically, Taoist Meditation is concentrated on the generation, transformation, and circulation of internal energy. Its objective is to calm the mind and body to the highest degree possible. Once the mind is emptied from stress, thoughts, and all other things, it is when the body is completely relaxed and can thus work in its full extent. It is a useful way of releasing stress from daily life. You are also able to balance your energy while allowing spirituality to develop comfortably and smoothly.
There are two primary guidelines used in Taoist Meditation. “Jing” refers to stillness, quiet, and calm, while “Ding” refers to concentration and focus. Your mind is usually pre-occupied with a lot of things. Here are some of the things you can do to clear your mind and focus on this type of Meditation:
- Pay attention to the flow of your breathing and energy throughout your body.
- Focus on the contractions as you breathe in and out.
- Imagine a candle, with your eyes shut. Shift your focus on the center of the flame, but don't lose sight of the edges. Ignore all outside interferences.
- Practice mantra.
- Allow your breathing to create a rhythmic beat. This will increase your energy and help you ignore outside interferences.
- Focus on a symbol that is very important to you.
Taoist Meditation works on all three levels: essence (body), energy (breath), and spirit (mind). The main points of this practice can be summed up in three C’s: calm, cool, and clear. Sitting on a chair and the half-lotus pose are two common positions used in Taoist Meditation. This type of practice also includes standing, lying down, and moving techniques. Most forms of Taoist Meditation are performed while moving. Examples of these are Chi Gung and T’ai Chi.
Taoist Meditation is simple and takes about 20 minutes a day to practice while providing long term effects. You can incorporate this practice in your everyday ritual. Some schools offer lessons in Taoist Meditation that you may want to try. Whatever type of Meditation you practice, make sure to understand its concept in order to benefit from it fully.
