How Meditation Works

photo from ABC-of-Yoga.com super member yogitonmoy In a Meditation session, it is crucial to focus your mind and leave your worries and other thoughts behind. Regular practice offers a lot of physical and mental heath benefits. It can also give you a deeper and better understanding of your purpose in life. With these benefits, you will wonder how Meditation works. This is what we are going to find out in this section.

You will not understand how meditating can affect your life unless you practice. Here are some guidelines in Meditation:
  • Find a clean and quiet place.
  • Wear non-restrictive clothing. Your position should also make you comfortable.
  • Do some warm-up and breathing exercises.
  • Do not think about anything. Try not to think about your problems and/or worries.
  • Keep other thoughts from coming into your mind. To do this, you need to concentrate on a single object such as a candle. Look at the candle and focus on it. As some would say, be one with the flame. This may be a difficult thing to do, but you will eventually be able to pull it off.
When your mind is finally clear of thought, you will feel calm but aware. As what experts would say, this is a feeling that is hard to describe. You will be able to understand once you have experienced it.

When you meditate on a regular basis, you will eventually see improvement in your physical and mental health. Based on several studies, this is manifested by a generalized reduction in multiple physiological and biochemical markers, such as decrease in heart rate, respiration rate, plasma cortisol which is a major stress hormone, pulse rate, and an increase in EEG (electroencephalogram) alpha which is a brain wave associated with relaxation. When meditating, one goes through a state of deep relaxation, while his mind's awareness level is increased. This results in faster reactions, greater creativity, and improved comprehension.

Meditation entails discipline, determination, and patience. You may not be able to meditate properly when you do it for the first time, but by meditating regularly, you will have a deeper understanding of how Meditation works, and you will see the changes in your health and well-being.

It is very easy to understand as to how meditation works.Thinking process is connected to breathing process. Mind movement needs breath movement. If you stop your breath, the mind stops suddenly. No worries,no tension,no past,no future. And you are in meditation!! Mind moving fast needs fast movement in breath. That is why when you are in anger, breath will move fast.

Thus only a moving breath is joined with the mind, with the body; a non-moving breath is disjoined. Then you are in the neutral gear. The car is running, the power is on, the car is making a noise -; it is ready to go forward -; but it is not in gear, so the body of the car and the mechanism of the car are not joined. The car is divided into two. It is ready to move, but the moving mechanism is not joined with it. The same happens when breath takes a turn. You are not joined with it. In that moment you are at your center, you are in touch with your real self, you are where you want to be.

That is why Pranayam is so important. That is why Pranayam is said to be central to Astanga Yoga of Patanjali.Pranayam, more than anything else, cultivates the mind.A cultivated mind ceases to be your master(as it usually is),and becomes your slave. Then mind does not use you;you use the mind whenever and wherever you want, and shut it whenever you want.Once the mind is closed you in the present, you are in meditation.

Meditation needs only you.It needs you as a child, free from all the garbage you have stuffed yourself with during life journey. It is this garbage which has created your logical mind, which is creating all the problems.Keep this mind aside, and you are in meditation. It is not forcing the mind to be quiet.Quiet is already there within you.Side track the mind and you are on your desired track,in meditation.

It is much easier to be in meditation because that is your real/natural state. It is not learning something new,but being in touch with which you already know.

Use your logical mind, and you may or may not find answers/solutions to your problems.Keep this mind aside, and be with yourself, and you get all your solutions which may not sound logical, but will ultimately prove right and fruitful for you.

The article above talks of concentration on some object to stop the thought process. It is always better not to be dependent on some outside help for meditation.Human body is self-sufficient machine, and can be used independently. Therefore, let us not develop the habit of focusing on some outside object from the very beginning.Focus on self, focus on navel portion, focus on breath and so on.

Meditationbe, you read all my posts in "What is Meditation",and if possible even the topics initiated by me.That itself may help.Or else get back to me.
Please ensure that you do meditation in the morning(at least to start with).Begin with deep breathing, and then alternate nostril breathing. Then recite AUM,laying emphasis at the end.AAAAUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.Last part is important because that really connects you to Divinity. This session should not be less than ten minutes. After this you will feel different. Now,if still not free from thought process, close your ears by fingers of both hands, and just listen to the silence inside. You have talked of concentration.Concentrate on inner self, any of the Chakras,Shushumna nadi etc.For the time being listen to the silence within. You will gradually not only be able to meditate, but will be happier, more satisfied, surer, more confident, and begin changing physically, mentally, emotionally, and obviously spiritually.

We need to relate and spend more time with our own self.Relating with one self means relating with breath, mind, inner self and then consciousness. The more you bring “pranic energy” in your body, higher will be the degree of your consciousness. The higher the degree of consciousness, there will be more possibilities for the higher intuitions to happen to you.And when you are in the range where mind has been uncluttered, body has been energized with “Prana Energy”, with the “Cosmic Energy”, you are more at an receiving end, where you’ll be able to imbibe the knowledge, the wisdom from your own higher regions.

A time comes when thinking stops and when thinking stops, real knowledge is received. This times comes faster, easier, and more frequently,if you meditate regularly. Every creative person is,therefore said to be a meditator, even if that person is not doing traditional meditations

Normally the mind is in a state of turmoil, filled with anger, jealousy, worry, hatred and ill-will – leading to disease-prone body.
In meditation, mind moves to a state where the thoughts are stilled and emptiness prevails. It not only makes you physically and mentally fit,it leads you to new awareness,an altogather new world,to your spirituality.

'When you can learn to follow the breath to your center, to your core, and open the lotus blossom, your thought goes there and you quiet down. Otherwise your mind will be flitting and fluttering. It's a bringing together of the breath, and then you can bring together your thoughts, and everything becomes not that drastically important.'

'You watch, not control the wandering mind, you remain centered in your watching the mind, you remain unconcerned -; just a pure witness, just like a mirror, reflecting: whatsoever is happening is good. Then slowly slowly as the watcher becomes stronger it starts absorbing the energies. Then energies are not available for psychic wandering, and those wanderings start stopping on their own accord.'Osho
