Factors that can cause RSI
Written by: ayammie
As the name implies, Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) occurs when a person does the same movement doing damage to the tendons, nerves, muscles, and other soft body tissues. People who commonly get this illness are meatpackers to musicians, who do the same thing everyday.
In general, RSI is a static strain on the body that causes the pains. Circumstances that contribute to a static position and straining of the neck and shoulder muscles are:
- Your sitting position
A proper and relaxed position of sitting and some variations in one's sitting position are necessary to prevent straining one's muscles. A tense and contorted position leads to a lessened degree of the supply of blood in one's body cells.
- Your working spot
For a good sitting position, you need an ergonomically equipped working spot that has been adjusted to your body. Unfavourable circumstances like too much sunlight, cold, draught, or the use of malfunctioning apparatuses influence your position. A tense and contorted position leads to a lessened degree of the supply of blood in one's body cells.
- Working hours
Not working too long with a screen and regular breaks reduce the strain. People who work longer than 35 hours a week have a chance of developing RSI that is twice as much as other people.
- The kind of things you have to do at your work
Lack of variation in the kind of activities you have to perform enhances the chance of developing RSI. Various kinds of different tasks is necessary to reduce the psychological and physical strain.
- The circumstances in which you have to work
Cooperation with colleagues, the quality of management, a surplus of or lack of social contacts, corporate culture, too little autonomy (influence) as regards to how you do your work, work-related stress (deadlines), high working speed as a result of too much pressure, and high mental demands can all cause stress.
- Personal factors
Your physical structure, for instance the mobility and the position of your spine, hyper mobility, sense of duty, the tendency to demand a lot from yourself, and being highly motivated can all increase the chance of getting RSI.
RSI can be a serious and painful condition that is easier to prevent that to cure. Awareness is one way of preventing RSI from occurring. Symptoms include tightness, discomfort, stiffness, soreness in the hands, wrists, fingers, forearms or elbows; tingling, coldness, or numbness in the hands; pain that wakes you up at night; feeling a need to massage any part of the body; and pain in the upper back, shoulders or neck.
As soon as you feel the symptoms of RSI, visit the nearest doctor available right away. It is critical that you deal with this problem as soon as possible so as to limit the damage. But do not rush things. Healing will happen but not as soon as a month or a year.
Awareness of RSI can help you prevent this disease and spare you from the world of pain and discomfort. Read some books about it or listen to people who have had RSI before.
