there are two types of meditation
concentrative meditation it focuses the attention on the breath, an image, or a sound (mantra), in order to still the
mind and allow a greater awareness and clarity to emerge.
mindfullness meditation according to Dr. Borysenko, "involves opening the attention to become aware of the
continuously passing parade of sensations and feelings, images, thoughts, sounds, smells,
and so forth without becoming involved in thinking about them."

Meditation is an art.Let us,for God sake, not divide it in kinds and groups, and try to understand it as science.

State of the mind: Alert non-thinking
A stable sitting position supports the stability of the mind and assists in focusing on the moment. The intention is to join body, breath and spirit; to be with oneself and with the world, without judgment, to be just present "here and now". Breathe slowly but fully into your belly and let your thoughts float like clouds. Do not identify yourself with your thoughts or follow them and you will gradually be immersed in silence.
Breath counting is an effective method of preventing thoughts. This method is taught by the Soto school (Shikantaza: only sitting). In Soto, Zen is practised facing the wall, unaffected by distractions. Expirations are counted from “One to Ten”, then start again with "One". When thoughts interrupt the counting simply come back to “One” and start again. This is performed without any aim and without any idea of challenge or competition.
The Rinzai school represents Koan-Zen. This is the other well-known Japanese way of Zen. Here meditation is carried out facing the center of the room. Koan-Zen is somewhat more dynamic. The relationship of master and disciple is more pronounced than in Soto-Zen.
Both kinds of meditation are practiced within Bodhi Sangha. P. AMA Samy guides and instructs all visitors according to their practice and need.
Zazen may also be practised solitarily at home. It is recommended that one start carefully and slowly e.g. five or ten minutes only per day in the first week. This may be increased to15 minutes daily during the second week and to 25 minutes daily from the third week on. It is important to practice regularly and 30 minutes each day is better then one hour every two or three days. As you become more adept it is recommended that you find a teacher and join a group to sit with and learn from.

Read the following anecdote-
'A European hunter, was lost in a forest in Africa. Suddenly he came upon
a few huts. He had never heard that a village existed in that thick forest. It was not on any map. So
he approached the chief of the village, and he said: This is a pity that you are lost to civilisation. The chief said: No, it is not a pity, we are always afraid of being discovered – once civilisation comes in we are lost.'
Unfortunately we are already very knowledgable.Let us not make logical mind more powerful.Let it be kept aside.Let us just be there--as natural as we came in this mundane world.Let the Nature/Divinity do the rest.We are not supposed to do anything.

Meditation is a state of mind achieved by relaxing the physical body and suspending conscious awareness. If practised regularly for long periods,It opens the door for higher conciousness, whereby the meditater is connected to the divine signals.Once the logical mind is kept aside,we get connected to the intuitive mind, and through that to the universal intelligence.
This changes you physically, mentally, emotionally, and,of course, spiritually. You get centered. You get established in your center which is at the Navel centre,Manipura Chakra, what the Japanese call Hara. Now nothing throws you off center for very long and you recover quickly. You find yourself reacting calmly and rationally, no matter what is going on around you or in your life.

I personally use meditation to control my anxiety and stress. I found that it can be very useful for these kind of problems.

Meditation is being, not doing.Let it be part of your being. Then there will not be any problem. Then there will not be any question of 'controling'negativity and stress.
