Can someone tell me why do we need to meditate and what it's purpose?

In my understanding, we need to meditate to connect to our Spirit within. Without meditation, we are involved only in our mundane lives.
The purpose of meditation is to be at peace, or to become the Spirit. That which is at total peace with everything, and being able to guide others in that peace.

My original purpose for meditation was to just clear my mind because I was so stressed at worked, but the more I did it, (after a couple months) I found that i actually felt better physically, had more energy, and was more quick witted.
After a couple years I realized that it had changed my approach to things and made me more of everythng that I wanted to be.
Now after many years, I cannot imagine my life without it. If you stick with it long enough it will help you feel better, be happier, and even help you make better decisions in your life.
I hope this helps

Meditation is probably the best way to connect to the infinite wisdom that resides in the cosmos and in our being.
After all we tend to forget the simplicity and genius that life flows by, our minds get carried away and we stop listening to the greatest wisdom that lies hidden within us.
Meditation is simply this: allowing the Hugh wisdom of life itself to go through us, it revives our spirit, it energizes our body and it clears our mind from the day to day craziness we immerse ourself in.
Just sit to connect !
Namaste,
C.

Meditation reduces stress.
Meditation is good for peace of mind.
Mental stressand tension gives rise to so many physical disorders meditation helps one to come out of it.
Meditation helps in concentration of mind.
Meditation is practiced in all religions so its religious aspect is also very important.
When you practise meditation each day, then you grow in your ability to be conscious of your thinking and emotions. This is a very great benefit, because when you can observe the reaction of 'your personality', then you have leverage to make changes in your conditioned behaviors.
Meditation is very important. It has a lofty purpose - to take us from this world full of suffering and misery into the world of never - ending happiness, joy and bliss. Meditation is also a method of pure discipline, that we must follow discreetly and if we follow it in a proper way we will find what we are looking for in ourselves.

Yoga,of which meditation is a part, literally means, joining, uniting, totalling. So,yoga is meant for uniting youself with yourself, uniting your outerself with your inner self, and then ultimately uniting your innerself with the universal self,of which you are a part.In other words it is a way of uniting your Atma(soul)with Paramatma(God).
But meditation’s narrower objective, which most of us want to achieve,is to stop chattering of mind.Meditation leads to cultivation and control of that part of mind(called in Shastras as Manas)which we in general parlance understand as mind.Once this chattering, its negative interference stops, and we see everything with more clarity, altogather differently(and I am telling you from experience).Closure of this chattering also opens our antenna to haven/cosmos,and we receive spiritual signals which guide us on our spiritual, and even material path. This closure/dormancy of mind leads to activation of the other part of mind(which shastras call Buddhi),which we understand as wisdom.I need not explain the use of wisdom!
Interstingly,it is believed that the word ‘man’ is derived from the word ‘manas’,denoting only material, logical being!!!!!
