Hello all, I am new to meditation and to this site so I will begin by introducing myself. My name is Kerry Lambert. I am a 27 year old male who has been seeking a way to combat stress and find a way to keep my mind less cluttered. I have tried self-hypnosis and enjoyed the experience but had no real success. I recently listened to the David Lynch audio book 'Catching the big fish' and it gave me the idea of looking into transcendental meditation. After a little research, I discovered it's HUGE price tag and became disheartened. But I continued looking into meditation and finding out as much as I could about the methods of T.M. I had read on one site that the chanting of a mantra had a similar effect to self-hypnosis. Remembering that I had a 'brainwave tuner' application on my phone, I decided to go and try the 'self-hypnosis' setting in my headphones whilst chanting a mantra I had found. I set it to 5 minutes and started chanting in my head. About 3 minutes in (and after very nearly nodding off a couple of times) an amazing thing happened. I seemed to wake up inside my head with the most intense feeling of bliss engulfing my arms, chest and legs. I don't know how else to describe it. A couple of mins later, the soundwaves in my headphones stopped and i opened my eyes exitedly and text my girlfriend immediately to tell her i'd had my first success with meditation. I could feel certain sensations in my body all afternoon and felt intensely happy. I have since purchased the Natural Stress Relief course in hopes of attaining the same level of deep meditation. However, I have not been able to reach the same state of consciousness since. Although, I have had some great experiences. So.. What I am wondering is.. Can anyone tell me exactly what I did and how I can do it again? I have literally no idea if what happened to me was normal or not. I have only been meditating for about 5 days and only know about it what I've read on the internet. Apologies for waffling on! I hope this made an interesting read and someone has some helpful answers! =] Cheers, Kerry x

Hi Kerry,

Meditating is all about stilling the mind - by repeating a mantra over and over until the mantra becomes meaningless.

Let me explain - whilst using your chosen mantra, the mantra suddenly become hard to repeat - then impossible to repeat - you are then at level - Alpha Level.

Hope this helps

Hiya Bass. :) One thing you should know about meditation experiences is that they're different for everyone. Sure others may have had sensations in their body, you are unique and so was your experience. Meaning - no one can tell you what you did or how you did it except you! All the answers are within you.

There's nothing wrong with your meditation experience, why would you ask if it was normal? First define "normal". :) You said that you felt certain sensations in your body and you felt intensely happy afterward did you not? Isn't that what you were looking for in the first place? Happiness? If so, then you why do you need to ask if it was normal or not? You found what you were looking for - happiness. Different people will have different experiences, so no one will be able to tell you how you can do it again except YOU.

Remember when we were kids and we would go outside a play and have the best time ever? Then, the next day we would try to recreate it, and couldn't. It just wasn't the same. Each new day holds within it new experiences--be open to them, they all won't have the same intensity level. Though I don't consider myself a Christian, I find Emmet Fox's The Sermon on the Mount very insightful and with just a few word replacements, I can easily apply some of his messages to my own spirituality. And I think this applies to what has happened to you: He says, "the most futile thing in the world is to seek to live upon a past realization. . . . Today's realization, no matter how feeble and poor it may seem, has a million times more power to help you than the most vivid realization of yesterday. Be thankful for yesterday's experience, knowing that it is with you forever in the change of consciousness which it brought about, but do not lean upon it for a single moment for the need of today." So, just keep experiencing your meditations as they are. . .and know you are doing great!

My advice would be to still look for and work to resolve the core issues that cause the stress.  For me, meditation has helped me learn more about myself, and thus get to the root of issues more effectively.  Not trying to tell you what to do, just offering my insight.  Good luck.

Real object of meditation is(and should be)coming back home, coming back to self. Most of us are lost in this mundane world, wandering, unsure of of what we are doing, not happy with what we have, what we are doing and so on.This experience back, towards self, on the road you have travelled forward,to the so-called civilised world, depends on your present beliefs, education, involvement in materialism and so on.Sometimes it may appear scarry to you,but it must never scare us.
Mantras are the easiest ways to be there, because with mantras you are touching the first tattava(element)this world is made up of.This is Akash(ether),space, which is all pervasive,in each part of you,and each part of this universe.AUM is the Superme mantra.
