Give it  time. Meditation also needs often practice. Sometimes expecting to do it perfectly causes more stress for yourself than you relieve and for sure you don't want to stick with it. You may start with shorter sessions like three to five minutes and work for longer sessions. And what you need also is a clear mind and willingness to do it also.

To help clear your mind, chose a word ( i use the word "empty") and whisper it back to yourself for a couple minutes. I have found this an effective technique for clearing my mind and getting into "the zone". When I get into that zone I continue repeating the word in my mind and let my breathing get deeper and deeper and then you're meditating.

I know that sounds over simplified, but like the person who posted before me said, you have to keep trying until you catch on. Start with small sessions and go longer as you feel comfortable.

Find something with a rhythm to follow... It can be your breath or find a gentle movement in your body and follow it. Let that rhythm totally engulf you. Get lost in a natural rhythm. Namaste, C.

Hello

Every meditator has had the same experience as you! Its in the mind's nature to think. But many of these thoughts can be disturbing. They can trigger anxiety, fear , anger etc.

So what do you do? There's a few schools of thought.

1. Place your attention somewhere else. You can do this by repeatedly bringing your mind back to a meditation "object" like the breath. (This can hard at first but does get easier with time). Or you can use a mantra (repeated in a subtle almost effortless way) to draw your mind in.

2.Watch the thoughts (mindfulness meditation). This gives you wisdom and strength.

Good luck.

More training is gate but keep feel of your self is key to emptying your mind. Your mind will relax and fly. My key is feel the palm hand what ever you can feel it. If you can keep feel your palm hand, you will feel and enjoy your meditation easily. I have free meditation for you. You may see here: www.mydragontattoo.com. This is not tattoo website but meditation website.

Great question. It comes up a lot. One thing to consider is to not look at anything that occurs during meditation as a distraction. Make it all a part of the meditation. Enjoy your mind, watch it. Let it go wild. . .after some time, it will quiet. I use to think of my mind as my enemy. All meditations would end in headaches and a sense of failure. But after some study (try books by Osho or Deepak Chopra--very insighful!) I have learned to appreciate the mind, it is a wonderful creation. It can be quite relaxing to just watch thoughts. This will help you not to attach yourself to your thoughts also (I use to act on just about every thought I had. Now I watch them, no action necessary. Then from a deeper place I can choose my next action). And if it you need a break from that, it is always nice to focus on the breath. I often do guided meditations. . .this can help too. On Deepak Chopra's website, there are many free guided meditations. I think the guide's name is Davidji. . .very helpful. I'm pretty sure they have podcasts on itunes as well. These are just some avenues I have taken and found great peace in them. Hope this helps. Enjoy your mind!

Have deep breathing, especially Anulom-Vilom(alternate nostril breathing). It will calm the mind and help your mind to be there.

The point when the mind in in full focus and there is no chattering, may take as many as ten years or fifteen years of constant practice. Mostly it takes much more. Usually, after three or four months of constant practice, one is able to see that there is slightly lesser chattering than it was earlier. Progress is very slow and in any case you should not be in a hurry. Journey itself is the destination. It takes time and all the patience that you have.

In fact 'focus' itself is problem. You focus on sleep, and you never get it.You focus on mind or meditation, and you are no where near it.You are not supposed to focus. You are not supposed to do anything.Just be there, and you are in meditative state. It may take seconds, not to talk of years.
